LED Desk Lamp

A message from Gerry Irrizary himself:

“In Design Studio, we develop our aesthetic sophistication and digital craftsmanship related to the maker mindset of mindset of creating something out of nothing. Our class explores technological-human interaction to convey meaning in the form of physical installations and interactive objects. This includes designing cardboard sculptures, pop-up cards, handmade paper, photo & image transfers, screen printing t-shirts, sewing, soldering and woodworking for signs and desk lamps. At times we integrate our academic studies (Science, Math, etc.) into the development of substantive works using our makerspace’s high-tech, low-tech and no-tech.”

Discover

Making woodcuts and cutting wood is pretty hard but it gets easy as you get used to the tools and start trusting it, as well as having great safety while using it. Cutting the wood in the middle was pretty fast but if you do it too fast the machine gets stuck inside the wood and breaks. Same applies for the acrylic pieces. But for the acrylic going too fast would melt the acrylic into the machine and would eventually shatter the piece. But going too slow would be doing nothing. For this project, we will make a LED Lamp, this lamp consists of 1 solid wood, 3 cut wood and 3 acrylic pieces. And the purpose was to be creative and make a lamp that would stand still while learning how to use the power tools.

Define

In order for the parts and pieces to be put together the materials need to be crafted to a certain degree to use. each piece was 8 inch long and 8 inch wide. And the center was cut with a power hand drill. And the bottom piece of the lamp would be cut into a smaller circle in the middle which is made of would so that the light would be wrapped around a peg which would be glued by gorilla glue. I have also used to band saw which was a bigger hand saw used to cut my lamp into piece. I have also used table clamps for holding the wood and acrylic in place so I wont hit my neighbor accidentally. Some safety hazards was goggles to protect eyes, apron to not get dirty and face mask to not inhale wood and other smells.

Design

The Hexagon Lamp is more likely to be more successful because it is easier to cut with band saw or jigsaw puzzle if wanted. And then smoothing the wood out.

Develop

Materials needed for this project was 1 solid wood, 3 cut wood and 3 acrylic pieces, band saw, gorilla glue, table clamps, horizontal sander, small peg led lights with cord and pencil. Final coat was polyester oil finish. No problems with my project.

Deliver

My projects meets all requirements stated above. I like how my project is. I don’t want to change anything about it except that I should have added a thicker layer of polyester so that dust doesn’t get stuck on top.
